This year, I have a great homeroom class! The students work really hard on their lessons and get their work done. Every day is a great day!

Check out our class website (it seems to work best in a Chrome browser). Just like your children, the website will change and grow as the school year progresses. You will find a school calendar, all their math assignments (this is very handy for kids who accidentally leave assignments at school), anchor charts for our reading lessons, vocabulary lists, spelling lists, a classroom blog, and helpful links. Remember - more will continue to be added, so keep checking back.
We’ve made a good start with the new math curriculum. Students are into the routine of sprints, classwork, exit tickets, and problem sets. 8th Math has been learning about integer exponents and scientific notation. 7th Math has been learning about ratios and proportional relationships. Attendance is also very important. We have assignments and take grades nearly every day. A very helpful math tool was on the school supply list - a TI-30XIIS calculator. Seventh and eighth grade students can use a calculator for some computation and to check their work before the assignment is graded.
In Reading, we are concentrating on textual evidence and getting the most out of what we read. Next, we will work on main/central idea. Also at the beginning of every week, we have Greek and Latin root vocabulary.
Since school started about two weeks ago, your students should be reading an AR book. Your student should be at about 50% of their AR goal by the time progress reports come out on September 16th. Another important reason for reading is that AR comprises 25% percent of their reading grade. In 7th and 8th grade, students should be reading novels or chapter books. Most students want to read short books, but it becomes more difficult to find short books that are written at a middle school reading level. I encourage every student to take a book home and read each night. Improving one's reading level will help comprehension in every subject. I’m really proud of Michaela Hampton! She is only 2 points away from her 1st quarter goal already.
In English, we are reviewing grammar and have spelling on Fridays. In Science, we are reviewing the scientific method and measurement. In Social Studies, we are beginning the unit about the Missouri Constitution. The students are already nervous about the constitution tests, but I know they will all do great.
In the Origami exploratory class, we have talked about the importance of accuracy and crisp folds. We have made an 8-pointed star that converts into a wreath. We will be using a Google app called Origami Player with an amazing variety of easy-to-follow directions.
If you need to contact me, feel free to call the school during my planning time which is from 10:10 to 11:00 each day. You can also email me at [email protected]. Check StudyInTheWoods.weebly.com for information about our class and helpful links.
